In Memoriam: Maserati drummer Jerry Fuchs (1975-2009)

Alternative Press - Scott Heisel on 11/9/09 @ 2:19 AM - altpress.com

The New York Times is reporting that Gerhardt "Jerry" Fuchs, drummer for a host of Brooklyn-based bands, passed away in the early hours of Sunday, November 8, at a New York City hospital after falling down an elevator shaft. He was 34.

Fuchs had gigged and recorded with the Juan Maclean, !!!, Turing Machine and others, but most recently had been a member of instrumental post-rock act Maserati, who just completed a tour opening for Mono a week ago. His bandmates issued a brief statement via Twitter, reading, "With overwhelming sadness, [Maserati] bids farewell to our drummer and dear friend Jerry Fuchs. Love you, bro."

AP spoke with Fuchs in 2007 about Maserati; you can read that here. A comprehensive obituary can be read here.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends and fans of Jerry Fuchs.

I had the pleasure of seeing Turing Machine live about four or five years ago, and I remember just being absolutely fixated on Jerry's drumming the whole set. They were an incredible band, and he is really what made it so. RIP, Jerry.

I'm beyond psyched for this record, as I was for the last one. and despite the fact that a lot of other bands think that Jared Leto concocted the perfect "rocker" role, it's proving to be an Oscar deserving role cause 30stm phenomenal, possibly one of the best bands of the decade in my opinion.

i thought it was going to be the vegas date! i think i would have cried!

Coug
Canceling shows proves that they care about the good people of Minneapolis and Omaha.

Damn I was hoping for a more detailed explanation. This is one of the best "drama" bands of all time.

craig tweeted that he was sorry for montes loss so im guessing someone in montes family passed away

I was super upset that they cancelled because I spent a ton of money on tickets, traveled four hours, and got a hotel for two nights just to see them. Plus the show sucked horribly without them! But I understand and hope Monte knows the fans are behind him. Maybe I can catch them at the Vegas show since Im flying in there that day for a 7 day vacation!!

Echo & The Bunnymen cancel U.S. tour

Alternative Press - Tim Karan on 11/6/09 @ 4:55 PM - altpress.com

British post-punk icons Echo & The Bunnymen have been forced to cancel their November tour of the U.S. due to tax issues with the IRS. The band had planned to play eight dates in the states in conjunction with the U.S. release of their new album, The Fountain, due Nov. 10. A statement released on behalf of the band explains: "The cancellation of the tour is due to the rejection of the band's Central Withholding Agreement (CWA) by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The rejection was unexpected as the Echo & the Bunnymen team submitted the necessary paperwork in due time and in accordance with the process that had been followed on previous tours. Additionally, the IRS offered no reasoning for the rejection and was unresponsive to our inquiries. This CWA allows for foreign entertainers to be paid in full, otherwise promoters are legally obliged to withhold a minimum of 30% in lieu of tax which ultimately will not allow for a tour to happen at this time."

Canceled dates include:
Nov. 15 - Atlanta, GA - Masquerade
Nov. 17 - Washington, DC - Black Cat
Nov. 18 - State College, Pittsburgh, PA - State Theatre
Nov. 20 - Glenside, PA - Kewsick Theatre
Nov. 21 - Fairfield, CT - StageOne
Nov. 22 - New York, NY- Hammerstein
Nov. 23 - Boston, MA- House of Blues
Nov. 25 - Chicago, IL - Metro

State College is nowhere near Pittsburgh Also case and point of less government

Coug
That blows, but it saves me a trip to NYC. Less government wouldn't have solved this problem... maybe less bureaucracy within the government and it's agencies.
