Green Day tap Butch Vig to produce next album

Green Day's fan site is reporting that the band have selected producer Butch Vig (Against Me!, Nirvana, Sonic Youth) to helm the recording of their next full-length.

Not including the band themselves (2000's Warning), Vig is the first producer other than Rob Cavallo the band will have worked with since 1992's Kerplunk!, which was recorded with punk producer Andy Ernst.

Apparently the as-yet-untitled album is due out next year. The band last released the Grammy-winning American Idiot in 2004. A 2009 release of their next album ensures that the gap between each subsequent full-length since 1994's Dookie has once again increased by a single year.

I have never taken a liking to anything that credits Mr.Vig as producer, but I'm rooting for these guys. it kind of irks me, but maybe it'll be rad, they seem like a match made in corporate-alternative heaven.
