NINE INCH NAILS SELF-RELEASE NEW, INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM FOR FREE

Taking a page from the Radiohead playbook, Nine Inch Nails chairman Trent Reznor, recently freed of major-label shackles, has launched a new album titled Ghosts I-IV. Reznor explains the project's genesis:
"This music arrived unexpectedly as the result of an experiment. The rules were as follows: 10 weeks, no clear agenda, no overthinking, everything driven by impulse. Whatever happens during that time gets released as... something.

We began improvising and let the music decide the direction. Eyes were closed, hands played instruments and it began. Within a matter of days it became clear we were on to something, and a lot of material began appearing. What we thought could be a five song EP became much more. I invited some friends over to join in and we all enjoyed the process of collaborating on this."
The all-instrumental album is broken up into four installments of nine songs each, with the first set, Ghosts I, currently available as a free, DRM-free MP3 download at ghosts.nin.com (mailing list signup required).

So how do you get the other three Ghosts installments, you ask? Trent's got you covered: On the order page, there's a variety of options to purchase the remaining music, ranging from $5 for DRM-free lossless digital audio of all four parts to a whopping $300 for an "ultra deluxe limited-edition package" featuring the collection on CD, vinyl, data DVD and Blu-ray disc, plus photos and art prints. That package is limited to 2500 pieces, hand-numbered and signed by Trent Reznor himself. (The music is also available in cheaper physical forms, as well, if you want more than just data files for less than $300.)

Finally, if you like what you're hearing, you'll be happy to know that Reznor promises that more Ghosts installments are to come down the line.
