Hey, why not?  This section doesn't see very heavy traffic, and I know I have random political thoughts that I don't deem threadworthy all the time, perhaps now I have a forum to foist them upon you all?  Heh, if people don't like this, the mods may happily lock.

Anyway, my random:

GO AWAY DICK CHENEY.  Please.  You have no further political ambition, and I don't possibly see how any semi-reasonable Republican could think they would benefit from your endorsement.  You hid out during almost your entire tenure, now you won't shut up.  Continually having you shoved in my face is like salt for wounds.  GO AWAY PLZ.

heh...

Also, GO AWAY (Democrat) MAYOR TOM.  Enough already, running for an unprecedented 5th term which you will likely win, unfortunately, is not making me happy.  Yet again, you'll not have my vote.

The problem with shooting food is that some people are cannibals.

Nancy Pelosi, for a politician you suck at telling a lie. Please practice on that so you don't get tripped up and look like a huge fool again.

Hahahaha, oh Emily, it's okay, that's why we love you.

Just promise me your first thought was of a sexual nature, not of a shitty 90s band.

I took that picture, by the way.  The random stuff you see while roaming the mean streets...or something.

quote:

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion [as a judge> than a white male who hasn't lived that life." -- Judge Sonia Sotomayor, in her Judge Mario G. Olmos Law and Cultural Diversity Lecture at the University of California (Berkeley) School of Law in 2001

This pisses me off. Decision making isn't affected by skin color. And liberal media (I sound like a GOP member, I don't mean it that way at all) is defending it saying she only meant "she could identify with more situations" and other such sh*t.

No, if a "white man" said he could make better decisions than a hispanic woman SH*T WOULD HIT THE FAN. But only white people can be racist.

^ *Sigh*

Read the whole speech, not just some little 24-hour cable news soundbite.  Here are the key passages:

"Let us not forget that wise men like Oliver Wendell Holmes and Justice Cardozo voted on cases which upheld both sex and race discrimination in our society. Until 1972, no Supreme Court case ever upheld the claim of a woman in a gender discrimination case. I, like Professor Carter, believe that we should not be so myopic as to believe that others of different experiences or backgrounds are incapable of understanding the values and needs of people from a different group. Many are so capable. As Judge Cedarbaum pointed out to me, nine white men on the Supreme Court in the past have done so on many occasions and on many issues including Brown."

...

"I am reminded each day that I render decisions that affect people concretely and that I owe them constant and complete vigilance in checking my assumptions, presumptions and perspectives and ensuring that to the extent that my limited abilities and capabilities permit me, that I reevaluate them and change as circumstances and cases before me requires. I can and do aspire to be greater than the sum total of my experiences but I accept my limitations. I willingly accept that we who judge must not deny the differences resulting from experience and heritage but attempt, as the Supreme Court suggests, continuously to judge when those opinions, sympathies and prejudices are appropriate."

She went out of her way to point out that a) she is talking about cases involving racism and sexism and b) white dudes have indeed made pro-equality rulings in the past and we are capable of making such rulings in the future.  And yes, in the past inteligent, wise white men made reactionary rulings in the fields of gender and racial equality.  Oliver Wendell Holmes is considered a genius by every legal scholar on all sides of the political spectrum, but he thought that the 14th and 15th Amendments didn't protect Blacks.  Earl Warren revolutionized constitutional law, but didn't lift a finger to overturn blatently sexist, unconstitutional laws. And anyone that doesn't think the fact that there were eight men on the bench affected Leadbetter is a fool.

Even that one sentence ripped out of context doesn't offend me. I too hope that a wise Latina judge would make a better conclusion than Warren, Holmes, or Scalia.  It strikes me as a "no duh" thing.  My only beef with her is that the phrase "Latina woman" is like "female actress".

Oh my goodness.  I can't believe I didn't notice this before, but now it's going to bug the crap out of me every time I hear it said by anyone.

As a Supreme Court nominee, though, I'm cool with her.

Dear Ted Kennedy,

Why are you still here?

We knew all the answers
And we shouted them like anthems.

Anxious and suspicious
That God knew how much we cheated.

Dear Kevin Rudd. I hate/severely dislike you. You are an embarrassment as a national leader.

"Fair shake of the sauce bottle mate", I mean really?
Come on, you could've gotten away with it if you just said it once, but six times?

I've been up for days, trying to find a way to write this confession down

Seems every line I writes a mess,
at least this I'll admit

I dislike old, rich, white people who live in the west hills who insist on banning controlled field burning.
