NOW PLAYING: Destroy Everything. Worship Nothing. (Ferret)
THE STORY SO FAR: Frontman Jay Navarro's tenure with Motor City ska-punks the Suicide Machines, Warped Tours and all, left him with a bitter taste in his mouth. He was, by his own admission, "over with what punk was and is, in a commercial sense." Still, you can't keep a seething man down, and before long he joined forces with fellow local musicians Alex Awn (guitar), Jeff Uberti (bass) and Justin Malek (drums) to form Hellmouth, a band very much fueled by the despair that surrounds them in their hometown, as Uberti attests. "Whether you've been a part of the desperation or not, walking around, seeing the people and knowing what's happening, it'll take its toll on you."
WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Brutal and uncompromising, Destroy Everything. Worship Nothing. proves that if Hellmouth are going to achieve any degree of success, they're going to do it on their terms. Gloriously impossible to label, fans of punk, metal and hardcore will all find something to wallow in. The album is split into two themes, Apocalypse and Blasphemy, that are prevalent in the songs' lyrics. Indeed, Awn goes as far as to say that "blasphemy rules." Uberti delves a little deeper. "Sexism, racism, homophobia--that shit isn't funny, but I do think it's fun insulting somebody who truly says they believe something and I can piss them off by saying the opposite." However, if there's an overriding theme to the album however, Navarro sums it up eloquently: "Fuck everything."
