k-os

NOW PLAYING: Atlantis: Hymns For Disco (VIRGIN)

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW HIM: After being a hip-hop staple in Canada for close to a decade, k-os is just starting to crossover stateside. Plus, Gym Class Heroes' Travis McCoy really likes him.

"It might be pretentious to say it, but it's the only way I know how to be, man," explains Trinidad-raised rapper k-os when asked what it's like to be able to tour alongside acts as seemingly disparate as pop-punkers RX Bandits and indie hip-hop icons Gym Class Heroes. "I love hip-hop artists plugging in their instruments and making some noise because that's a whole different experience," he continues. "What I always say is that if De La Soul or A Tribe Called Quest had a band, this is what I'd sound like, you know?" In that spirit, k-os' third full-length Atlantis: Hymns For Disco is ripe with instrumentation, including everything from trumpet to violins to turntables, and creates a unique musical amalgam that's part hip-hop, part reggae and all original. "I can't get mad when people ask me how I categorize my music because I've sat in the studio and changed a drum sound or steered away from a certain keyboard sound because it was too popular," admits k-os, who sings, raps and speaks his way through the album's 14 sonic tracks. And although he's been confirmed to perform on the entire Warped Tour this summer, that's about all k-os knows about his future-and that's the way he likes it. "It's kind of a cool feeling to do a 40-minute set in front of a bunch of 18-year-old kids who are looking at you like you just started touring," the Canadian hip-hop veteran explains. "I think it's a very interesting attitude to adopt." -Jonah Bayer
