HQ: Portland, OR NOW PLAYING: Dead Skin/Dried Blood (RED LEADER; redleaderrecords.com) THE STORY SO FAR: Aaron Scott began belting out his distinctive vocals more than a decade ago in the melodic-but-still-pissed Brooklyn, New York, punk outfit De La Hoya. Unfettered by that band's 2002 split, Scott's next group Marathon further revealed the singer's clever and socially conscious songwriting. But that band's 2006 breakup set the stage for Scott's solo project, Attica! Attica! "After doing almost 10 years with touring bands, it was time for me to try something where the priorities reflected a little more of what I wanted to be doing with my life," he says. "I think it's sort of an organic evolution into the next stage for me." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Lots of "older" punks eventually make a "grown-up" record, but few hone their skills like Scott. Dead Skin/Dried Blood is best-in-class mature-core, layered tastefully with guitars, cello, piano and more. While the vitriol of fire hall politicos changes over time, Scott hasn't abandoned his fight-as evidenced by the "Attica" moniker (referring to a '70s prison riot resulting from inhumane living conditions). "It reflects my desire to give recognition to struggles that are hidden or left in the margins," says Scott. "That's not what all my songs are about of course, but I also made a point not to leave that out as I gravitate toward a more personal style." -Ronen Kauffman YOU LIKE?
