NOW PLAYING: The Best Gun (EXOTIC FEVER; exoticfever.com)
THE STORY SO FAR: Look up "pash" in the dictionary and you'll see it's slang for a crush or infatuation. Luckily for this four-piece D.C. rock band, the name is two-fold: It describes both how they formed and what fans will be feeling for the poppy rock tunes brought to life by vocalist Merideth Munoz's lilting range. While working in their college's gig spot, Munoz spotted guitarist Erik Bruner-Yang and decided to impress him. "I saw this cute guy, so I was kind of showing off and playing songs on an acoustic guitar," admits Munoz, laughing. "He came up to me and said he liked what I was playing. [Later,] we got together in his dorm room, and his roommate John [Bibb] played drums, so we all just started playing and [the band] just kind of happened from there."
WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Though Munoz and Bruner-Yang kept things platonic ("Erik and I have never kissed and never will," promises Munoz), it hasn't stopped Pash-rounded out with Ryan McLaughlin on bass-from making tight tunes centered around lost or unrequited love. "Since I've been a songwriter, it's always been [about] heartbreak," says the singer. "Everything is me taking a situation and trying in my own way to be clever and kind of spiteful at that person. Then when they hear it, they'll pick up on something and know I was talking about them." Broken-hearted lyrics do not translate into a weepy live show, however. "There's a lot of sweat involved," says Munoz of their performances. "Not that we're a bad recording band, but we really like to shine on the live front." -Rachel Lux
