HQ: Sacramento, CA NOW PLAYING: Downtown Battle Mountain (RISE) THE STORY SO FAR: In late 2005, Dance Gavin Dance rose from the scattered ashes of notable Sacramento screamo and pop-punk collectives like Ghost Runner On Third, Farewell Unknown and Atherton. By the following February-after cycling through several guitarists-the six-piece settled on their current lineup and six months later, the dynamic post-hardcore outfit had landed a deal with Rise Records. "It was kind of a comprehensive package prize," says guitarist Sean O'Sullivan about signing to Rise, citing the label's powerful exposure capabilities and affiliate booking and publicity groups. "[Rise carries] something a lot of small labels don't." WHY SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Not only are Dance Gavin Dance prolific -their debut EP Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean dropped in November 2006, followed last May by the full-length Downtown Battle Maintain produced by Kris Crummet (Fear Before The March Of Flames, Drop Dead, Gorgeous)-but they inject a formulaic genre with innovative traits so vitriolic that Congress is allegedly scheduling an inquest. "Other bands are gonna write what they write; we're pretty content just to [play] the music we create," says O'Sullivan. And that usually includes everything from spastic bits of technical and complex guitar shredding to a slew of radical time changes and atmospheric settings that could school an entire chain of VFW hall nĂ¼-screamo chumps.
