Coffee Shop: Does Jeffree Star take it too far?

Alternative Press - Tim Karan on 11/8/09 @ 7:00 AM - altpress.com

If you picked up AP 257, you undoubtedly noticed our feature on Jeffree Star. The controversial musician and internet celeb had kind of a turbulent run on Warped Tour this past summer, and he just filmed a video for his song, "Get Away With Murder," this weekend. For this week's Coffee Shop topic, we want to know: Does Jeffree Star take it to far? Let us know what you think!

Jeffree Star doesnt "take it too far" but whoever wrote that article did. Calling him "queer" and a "faggott" is not acceptab;e. I love AP mag, and i love how you guys really dont seem to give a shit. But you may need to thinka little buit before you publish articles like this one. I actualy found myself cringing while reading this article. It's offensive. I'm straight, but I have a few gay friends, and seeing those words in print being used like theyre just another word like "the" or "as" was pretty offensive to me.

enmarwen
Considering s/he uses it that way? I don't see the problem. I will say I hate Jeffree Starr, but not for being a raging homo, just because s/he sucks major ass. No talent, just a gimmick. "omg, I'm a tranny" =/= talent.

jacarroll09
Learn a little bit more about the community that you're trying so hard to defend. First of all I only saw the word "faggot" in a quote from Jeffree Star himself in which he was describing the stuff that other people say about him. And there is nothing wrong with the word "queer" as long as you're not saying "You f***ing queer!" That word is used as an umbrella term in the LGBT community to refer to anyone who's not entirely straight. And the article even used the word in an empowering way, mirroring chants you hear at gay rights rallies/marches. Take it from someone who actually IS gay, the article was fine, and props to AP for covering a role model to kids who get crap for being different.

in all honesty i agree jefree star is a phase nobody truly (music wise) cares about him. im not saying i myself dont know a few songs but he is over hyped and in the grand scheme of music he is unnessicary.

JoeyOath
Is it taboo to say something sucks if the person is gay? Music is like the constitution, it's colorblind. Which means that regardless of race or sexual preference his music SUCKS!!!!!! What kid wants to look up to a dude who has zero lyrical substance and talent??

mourninglory
Exactly, JoeyOath. This guy is talentless and useless. Not to mention an ignorant asshole who uses racial slurs because he thinks it's funny and to get people talking. There is a fine line between shock value and blatant attention mongering, offensive stupidity. This guy has crossed that line by leaps and bounds. There are absolutely no redeeming qualities in his music or his persona what so ever. I'm actually appalled that he is even considered an "artist". He's nothing more than a novelty hack. He appeals to very young kids who think cursing as much as possible and a man wearing obnoxious make up and talking about his "vagaina" is cool. Turn this shit off and listen to Alice Cooper ffs.

ThespianSam
Honestly I can't see why any person would actually look up to this hack. I'm not a homophobe or anything but I hate him and everything he stands for. This guy has absolutely no talent and absolutely no meaning or substance behind his lyrics, which therefore makes his music trash (even though it already was just that). I feel sorry for any up and coming artist that looks up for Jeffree Star or considers him an influence, because there really isn't anything about him to really be influenced by.

Prisoner315
I used to look up to him and have known of him since he first hit Myspace. I hate him as a person, but loved his make-up and music. Beauty Killer was such a complete failure in my eyes with only 3 songs on there worth the replay time while the rest of the songs should have all the credit go to the producers like Gods Paparazzi. I had high hopes after 'Prisoner' and 'Love Rhymes With **** You'; ELECTRONIC ARTIST OR NOT, he should stick with small music releases. He just doesn't have the voice or the heart put into his work - he has no depth. Food & sex, that's it - and his producers are stuck editing his voice. Plus his makeup is mad boring, he simply has no edge anymore.

attackattackisamazing
I dont think he takes things too far. He speaks his mind, which is a right that we all have, supposedly.

In my personal opinion I don't think you can really blame him. The fact that the record companies gave him a place to be looked up to, and to put his music out on the market is their fault. It's like in The Dark Knight Jeffree Star is a wild dog, and I want whoever let him off the chain. I blame the record companies for even giving him a chance. He isn't there to create music, he's there to make fame, and build a reputation. I feel bad for the music industry, and how it suffers in the artistic department for having artists just like him in the mix with actually talented people. I guess everything is a business in this day, and age. Sacrificing art to make money off a dog who's had his day.

enmarwen
dude, now a days (fuck I feel old saying that) No one gives a shit about musical talent, it's all about how big of an attention whore you can be. Look at shit like Brokencyde, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Jeffree Starr is just one more car on the train of shit barrelling over the poor hobo that is music.

KaseyConn
Jeffree Star just needs a filter. Plain and simple.

richardradical
listen to real music. the guy's a joke. i think Buddy Neilsen had it right when he called out that brokencyde/millionaires garbage. how can anyone constitute this as real music? the guy, or whatever the hell you want to call it.. and i can say that b/c it put itself in the public for the attention, is marketing to a group of 13 y/o kids. don't believe me? check out the fans at his warped dates my ex-g/f's 12 y/o sister said, and i quote, " the fag was the best show i saw all day. his hair was so pretty and the t-shirts are so colorful. i want one." blaming record companies is a scape goat... blame yourselves for buying his shit... b/c thats exactly what it is... shit

Blackop0189
Dear enmarwen: I completely agree, and understand it's all about the attention. It's just sad, you know? I wish it was about the artistic value. I play music too, and I have for a while since I was 11. I know that's how the world works, and it's time to deal. There are some people with talent out there. I just don't understand how they can call him an artist. I feel like he should be in the comedy section at your local music store.

chrisfitz182
It's simple as this: Jeffree Star is a completely untalented doucher. You want to listen to real music created by truly talented people? Go pick up the new Brand New album or the new Julian Casablancas album. AP magazine itself is a joke. Almost every new band covered in this magazine is a carbon copy of the last one. Do yourself a favor and listen to some real music.

enmarwen i do recall that Lady Gaga is a real musician. just because it's pop music doesn't mean she doesn't know music. Watch her VMA's performance, she plays piano fluently. I give Jeffree star props. It's called music Business for a reason. If you write stuff that sells, you will do well, if you don't like what the person is playing dont listen. he's making a living on music. he might be allot of looks, but he's making money. And dont bash on AP. They were the source of info on what you call your music. They are just informing people about music that is coming up. doesn't matter what you call it music or not, it's still going to happen no matter.

TheStarsArePink
So, personally, I find Jeffree Star fascinating. So what if you don't like his music, there are people out there that find it entertaining. Get off your high horse of "artistic quality" and "influences" because art is all about interpretation. He is also out there to express that it is okay to be different. The fact that he is doing his own thing is impressive. You have your lifestyle, why do you have to bash his? And I don't think he needs to be filtered... you can say what you want, right? People need to be exposed to all types of people out there and, as much as some may not want to believe it, they are the same as you and I. So I give many props to Star.

@jacarroll09: Thank you for noting that I am innocent of the gay-slurring that Jearbear34 had accused me of. It is appreciated. @chrisfitz182: For somebody who knows what "real music" is, it seems counter-productive to take time from listening to said music to post on a message-board community for which you have no interest. Call me old-fashioned.

kapy53
Musically I think he sucks. BUT he puts on one hell of an entertaining show. The crowd and his set at warped made me laugh about 40 times. I enjoyed it for a being like a super campy live Rocky Horror type thing. Maybe that's what he want's someone like me to think, that it's kinda funny to act over the top and what not. I will say this tho, dude's got the biggest balls on the whole warped tour for looking like he does. In short he's not so much a musician as an entertainer.
