Salena Catalina

HQ: Pittsburgh, PA
NOW PLAYING: This Delicious Torture (salenacatalina.com)

THE STORY SO FAR: With a stand-up bassist who's really a guitar player (Pete Bush), a drummer who's really a bassist (Chris Colpo) and a lead vocalist (Lexi Rebert) and a pianist (Jen Fisher) who'd never been in bands ever (really), angular jazz/sex/punk quartet Salena Catalina formed for a one-off show six years ago and evolved into a cult cabaret Steel City sensation thanks largely to their clinically addictive crowd-pleaser, "Fly Away Bird." Although Bush relocated to Seattle in 2004 causing temporary hiatus, the members have been collaborating for their third album over the wide, wide interweb.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: You'll never find so much intentionally unintentional sexual innuendo and compositional complexity in as melodic and legal a package as Salena Catalina. "We're a jazz band rooted in punk," says Bush. "Plus we have [sultry frontwoman] Lexi. We were once described as a 'musical lap dance.' So there ya go." [TJK]
