THE STORY SO FAR:Originally dubbed NES, Nothing Ever Stays aren't Nintendocore, but they did spend their formative years searching for a sound to call their own, until 2003, when they cracked the emotive pop-rock code encrypted by fellow acronym-worshipers Jimmy Eat World. After their first full-length, 2004's Two Years Later, and a healthy dose of West Coast touring (including an acoustic show at a Starbucks in their hometown), the band had their first setback when bassist Mike Mallet parted ways with the group. Luckily, drummer Ryan Kirkpatrick knew another bassist--his brother, David, who plugged the hole and kept the group, rounded out by frontman Milan Vrajich and guitarist Doug Kessinger, going.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: "One of the main things that everyone enjoys about our band is that we don't use any screaming in our songs, but instead have harmonies," says Kessinger. Those harmonies were recently put to tape by Jeff Schneeweis of Number One Gun, who recorded the band's new EP, Progression. "Jeff was really excited for our sound and our originality," David says. "We learned a lot from him." And Progression is right: One listen to the band's material pre- to post-EP, and it's obvious they've matured from SoCal punk-pop to gorgeous emo-rock. "We are really just humbled by everything that has happened recently," confesses Ryan, "and are so grateful for what God has given us." --Scott Heisel
